The Day I Thought My Marriage Was Over

If you had asked me years ago whether a marriage could come back from the brink, I’m not sure I would have answered with confidence.

My husband and I were deeply involved in the reggae music scene. Along with that lifestyle came heavy drinking and influences that slowly pulled us away from the marriage we wanted. We were together physically, but emotionally we had become distant.

Then one day everything came to a head.

My husband accused me of cheating on him.

I remember thinking, “This is probably the end.”

The accusation hurt because I knew I had been faithful. At the same time, I also realized something important. Although I hadn’t done what he accused me of, I had allowed us to stay in an environment that was damaging our relationship. Our lifestyle was creating distance, mistrust, and confusion.

That moment forced us to ask a difficult question:

What mattered more, our lifestyle or our marriage?

The Conversation That Changed Everything

Instead of walking away, we sat down and had one of the most honest conversations we’d ever had.

Neither of us was perfect.

Neither of us had all the answers.

But we both recognized the direction our marriage was heading.

Together we made a decision to change.

We prayed.

We searched for a healthy church where we could grow spiritually.

We intentionally stepped away from the environment that had been pulling us apart.

Looking back after 32 years of marriage, I believe God was opening our eyes to the path we were on before it was too late. He wasn’t simply rescuing our marriage. He was changing the direction of our lives.

Prayer Became the Center of Our Marriage

Our marriage didn’t heal overnight.

Restoration was a process.

The biggest change was simple but powerful: prayer became the center of our relationship.

As we prayed together, other changes naturally followed.

Our conversations became more loving.

We became more honest with each other.

Instead of assuming the worst, we learned to communicate openly.

We also made difficult but necessary decisions about our lifestyle.

We:

  • Stopped drinking completely.

  • Chose our friends more carefully.

  • Surrounded ourselves with people who strengthened our faith instead of pulling us away from it.

None of those decisions felt easy at the time.

But every one of them helped move our marriage in a healthier direction.

Healing Didn’t Happen Overnight

One mistake many couples make is expecting one conversation, one prayer, or one weekend getaway to fix years of hurt.

That wasn’t our experience.

Healing took time.

Trust grew one day at a time.

Communication improved one conversation at a time.

Our family slowly became happier as we continued making choices that supported our marriage instead of competing with it.

The change wasn’t immediate.

But it was real.

The Biggest Lie Couples Believe

After more than three decades of marriage, I believe one lie destroys hope faster than almost anything else:

“Our marriage can’t be saved.”

I’ve heard it.

I’ve felt it.

But I’ve also lived the opposite.

Another piece of advice I often hear is, “Talk to your friends about it and just give it time. It’ll get better.”

Time alone doesn’t heal a marriage.

Direction does.

If you’re walking away from each other, more time only creates more distance.

For us, things began changing because we changed our direction. We chose our marriage and our family over the lifestyle that was pulling us apart.

What I Would Tell a Couple on the Brink

If a couple sat across from me today and told me they were on the verge of giving up, I wouldn’t begin by listing marriage tips.

I would tell them our story.

I would tell them that restoration is possible.

I would encourage them to honestly evaluate what is influencing their marriage.

Ask yourselves:

  • What is pulling us apart?

  • Are our daily habits helping our marriage or hurting it?

  • Are we willing to make difficult changes together?

  • Are we inviting God into the center of our relationship?

Sometimes the biggest breakthrough begins with one honest conversation and one shared decision to move in a different direction.

What Restoration Looks Like Today

People sometimes imagine that a restored marriage means never having disagreements again.

That’s not our story.

Our marriage isn’t perfect.

But it is healthy in ways I once thought were impossible.

Today my husband and I are open and honest about our feelings.

We communicate with love instead of fear.

We’re each other’s best friend.

We know each other deeply.

We accept each other for who we are.

Perhaps one of the greatest blessings has been watching our children.

They’ve seen the difference.

They’ve told us our marriage has influenced their own relationships.

That may be one of the greatest gifts God has given us through our restoration.

Can a Marriage Really Come Back From the Brink?

Our answer is yes.

Not because we ignored the problems.

Not because everything suddenly became easy.

Our marriage came back because we recognized the direction we were heading and chose a different one.

We made prayer the center of our home.

We changed our environment.

We established healthy boundaries.

We learned to communicate with honesty.

Most importantly, we placed our marriage and our family above the lifestyle that was slowly pulling us apart.

If your marriage feels like it’s hanging by a thread today, don’t assume the story is over.

Sometimes the brink isn’t the end.

Sometimes it’s the place where God begins writing a brand-new chapter.
